Jewellery Repair FAQ

1. Do I need to remove my jewellery when doing activities?

We highly recommend removing your jewellery before cooking, preparing food, doing the dishes, or engaging in any kind of outdoor activity, such as gardening, going to the gym, bike riding, canoeing, or swimming.

The same rule applies to manual labor-intensive jobs, such as mechanics, plumbing, and machinery operation.

The jewelry you wear every day is crafted from precious metals like gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. However, this does not mean it can withstand all kinds of strain or force.

Jewelry can get knocked and scratched, ring prongs can become damaged, stones may loosen and eventually fall out, or get chipped and damaged. Some gemstones, such as emeralds, opals, and pearls, are more prone to damage than others. The same applies to delicate and dainty jewelry, which can easily break or become damaged.

If your jewellery is damaged contact us Euphoria Jewels to discuss repair options.

Below are some examples of repairs we have carried out.

Before: Gemstone has been cracked in half

After: The ring has been repaired with a new Tiger’s eye gemstone

Before: This customer’s ring has been squashed and lost its shape and a diamond has fallen out of the ring

After: The ring has been repaired

Chemicals like chlorinated water can have an adverse reaction on your jewelry. For example, the luster of your pearl will become dull and destroyed. Opals are quite porous and sensitive—they can get damaged and cracked. Diamonds, on the other hand, are strong and durable, but there are still some exceptions to the rule. For example, diamonds can chip or fracture if you accidentally hit them at just the right angle with just the right force.

Diamonds have four perfect cleavage planes. Cleavage refers to a split in a diamond along its flat surface, parallel to its crystallographic plane. Cleavage is caused by weak atomic bonds.

Wearing your rings while swimming makes your finger size shrink, meaning your ring can easily slip off your finger.

When it comes to cooking and handling food, even though it goes without saying that jewelry should be removed, most people forget to do so. Bacteria and pathogens can grow when they get stuck under your rings, or food particles get trapped in the ring setting, causing bacterial growth—including dangerous strains like Staphylococcus aureus.

Jewellery is meant to be worn and adored every day but looking clean and sparkling is something we admire and love the most.

By following these simple, everyday rules, you prolong the longevity of your jewellery, and your jewellery will always look beautiful.

Pearl Restringing

We recommend restringing your pearls once a year, depending on the frequency of wear.

If you are unsure whether your pearl necklace needs to be restrung, please seek professional advice. A professional will inspect your strand and advise you accordingly.

There are a few ways to tell if your pearl necklace needs to be restrung:

  • If the string is worn and frayed.
  • If the silk thread has been stretched—this happens due to normal wear and tear, causing the pearls to slide back and forth along the string.

Please keep in mind that pearls are traditionally strung on silk thread, sometimes knotted between each pearl and sometimes not. Over time, the silk will fray and eventually break. If that happens, you could damage the luster of your pearls or even lose them.

Euphoria Jewels provides a professional pearl cleaning and re-threading service. Please bring your pearls in for a no-obligation assessment.

Absolutely! There is no better way to recycle unworn, broken, or out-of-style jewellery sitting in the drawer than by transforming it into a brand-new piece that suits your style, saves you money, and retains the sentimental value of your once-beloved jewellery.

At Euphoria Jewels, a big part of our business is the restoration and refurbishing of vintage pieces that have been passed down through generations as gifts.

Every piece of jewellery that comes into our workshop has a story to tell, and most of the time, those stories are not only amazing but also sentimental—marking a significant milestone or a special occasion, like a birthday or an anniversary. This allows families to share history, memories, and cultural heritage.

Whether it’s a small or more complex jewellery refurbishment, rest assured that your jewellery is in good hands. Our skilled craftsmen, with vast experience in restoration and jewellery repair, will meticulously take extra care to restore the beauty and brilliance of your once-beloved jewellery—bringing it back to its former glory to be worn and cherished for generations to come.

There are many reasons why this may happen. We will address some of them below, but as a general rule, always remember to take your jewellery for inspection by a professional jeweller every six months.

If you notice your stone moving in the setting, please do not ignore this issue. Your prongs may need to be tightened, re-tipped, or replaced. Most of the time, we find that customers accidentally knock their jewellery—for example, when placing shopping bags in the car boot, trying to open a locked car door, or riding a motorbike. Jewellery can also get severely damaged when worn at the gym, during gardening, or even while washing pots and pans in the kitchen. You can dent or bend your rings out of shape, compromising the security of your stones.

Another reason you may lose a stone is natural wear over the years. Prongs begin to thin out after prolonged use, and the tips may slightly raise above the stone. As a result, there may not be enough metal holding the stone in place. If you hit your ring at the wrong angle or if the prongs catch on your clothing, you could easily lose a stone. Addressing issues early can prevent the loss of a beloved stone and avoid costly repairs.

At Euphoria Jewels, we offer a free cleaning service. Our jeweller will thoroughly inspect your ring after cleaning to ensure it does not show signs of wear and that all stones remain secure and intact.
